A Minecraft Movie Trailer Breakdown: Easter Eggs, Game References, Story Details, Piglins, And More

The Minecraft movie won't be out until next year. However, the first teaser trailer dropped. The film has been in the works for a long time: 10 years, to be exact. And for a game that originally didn't have a story, it looks like A Minecraft Movie is going to be exceptionally fun.

The movie stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks--there are more stars, but they were not featured in this trailer. The movie is written by Chris Bowman, Rob McElhenney, and Hubbel Palmer, and it is directed by Jared Hess.

There is an official description of the movie as well, and of course, there are some familiar monsters: "Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn't just help you craft, it's essential to one's survival! Four misfits--Garrett 'The Garbage Man' Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)--find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world."

Outside of this description, there's also been mention of the Ender Dragon, which is the giant monster you get to battle in the world of The End--which is totally optional in the game.

While this first teaser is pretty brief, it does give us some insight into what's going to happen in A Minecraft Movie. We looked through every moment of the teaser and found some interesting things, from what other things may happen in the film, to a plethora of Easter eggs.

    1. This will be important

    1. This will be important

The opening shot of the trailer is this portal. If you're familiar with Minecraft, you'll recognize the movement in this block as some kind of portal. It's not a Nether Portal. It's not an End Portal. It's something new.

    2. Overworld

    2. Overworld

Here's the establishing shot of Overworld--the place you spend most of your time exploring in Minecraft. It's more of a highly-detailed version of its video game-counterpart though. There are a lot more textures, as if this Minecraft world was made with RTX turned on.

There's a small town--one bigger than the typical villages you may come across--located under an arc. It looks like it's mainly made of dirt, but there has to be some stone under there too, right? While many of the structures look like typical minecraft village abodes, there are also a number of towers.

    3. Another look

    3. Another look

There's another look at the world of Minecraft, not focused on the town. We get to see the lushness of the world and how expansive it is. There's green pastures, lakes, waterfalls, cliffs, and mountains with lava flowing from the tops.

There are also a group of humans who have wandered in.

    5. That portal mentioned earlier

    5. That portal mentioned earlier

We catch a glimpse of Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison, played by Jason Mamoa. Little is known about his character, but he looks like an aging '00s garage rock singer.

Anyway, the portal in the background looks like the same one from the beginning of the trailer. It seems to be made out of obsidian--just like a Nether Portal--but it's not glowing purple, it's glowing blue.

    6. Quickly, make some shears so we can have a pink bed!

    6. Quickly, make some shears so we can have a pink bed!

This pink sheep is the first animal we come across in the trailer. As mentioned before, the world doesn't look exactly like the video game does. Things are shaped like blocks, but there are a lot of finer details that have given the movie a lot of texture and made it look pretty cool. We should note, no matter how you've tweaked your game's RTX settings, your sheep won't look this animated.

    7. That block has something to do with it

    7. That block has something to do with it

Here are a few more members of the cast of Minecraft: The Movie: Henry played by Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Natalie played by Emma Myers, and Dawn played by Danielle Brooks.

Henry is holding a glowing orb, and this most-likely has something to do with how these humans entered into the Overworld. Alternatively, it could be the Tesseract from the Avengers movies and, secretly, A Minecraft Movie is part of the MCU.

    8. Piglins and more!

    8. Piglins and more!

Piglins come from the Nether, an underworld filled with monsters and a lot of lava. Piglins seem to be the primary baddie in this movie. Piglins are the humanoid equivalent of the Nether and have their own weapons. You can barter with them and they're friendly, but only if you're wearing one piece of golden armor. There are also Piglin Brutes. Both of these types can turn into zombies.

The animals the Piglins have chained up and used as balloons are Ghasts. They can fly and shoot fireballs at you. They're not fun to run into. These Ghasts look far more horrifying than the ones in-game, though. Why are their eyes bleeding?

    9. Here we go…

    9. Here we go…

While using a crafting table, there are plenty of items in the background, going from left to right, here is what we see:

    • Diamond sword
    • Steel sword
    • Trident
    • Torch
    • Ender chest
    • Painting (That's really an item you can craft)
    • Iron ingots
    • Iron bars
    • TNT
    • Watermelon
    • Wooden helmet
    • Diamond helmet
    • Emerald helmet
    • Glowstones? (We're unsure about this one)
    • Books
    • Potions
    • Fireworks
    10. Crafting

    10. Crafting

Garrison uses some iron to craft two buckets. These can be used to transport liquids like water, lava, and milk.

    11. Someone has been punching trees

    11. Someone has been punching trees

In order to craft in Minecraft, you need basic materials, which will help you craft tools and a crafting table. When you start the game, you end up punching trees to break them into woodblocks, and when that happens, there's a floating item for you to collect. Here, we see a floating wood block, so it's safe to assume that someone punched a tree until a block broke.

    12. More piglins

    12. More piglins

Piglins are a staple of the Nether, which makes it a bit out-of-place to see them in the Overworld. They're in the middle of town, right near Steve's Lava Chicken, and the group is led by a Piglin Brute. This, along with the Ghast balloons being used earlier could be a sign that the Nether creatures are invading the Overworld.

    13. Watch out behind you!

    13. Watch out behind you!

Garrison has a really annoying monster behind him: a Creeper. These jerks will start flashing when they're close to you, and then they blow up, destroying the blocks around them. Many times, if your village isn't well-lit by torches, they can destroy your houses. They are very very annoying to deal with early on in your game. Just keep an ear out for the sound of a lit fuse.

    14. The Nether

    14. The Nether

We finally get to see the Nether, which you need a Nether Portal to get to. As mentioned earlier, there is a lot of lava, and this is the place where Piglins come from. There's also a hunchbacked monster in the middle with purple eyes. Typically, the only purple-eyed monsters in the game are the very slim and tall Endermen--don't look at them. But because of the shape of this creature, it could be something else.

    15. Steve

    15. Steve

Finally, there's Steve, the default skin for your character when you start the game. Jack Black's version of Steve seems to be from the real world, and by the look of his beard, he's probably been there a long time. Don't worry, he's still in his teal-colored shirt.
