Black Myth: Wukong Feng-Tail General guide - How to tame the giant beetle boss
The Black Myth: Wukong Feng-Tail General is a giant beetle boss found in Mount Huaguo in Chapter 6. It, along with the other massive beasts in this region, reward you with the mythical rarity Monkey King/Heaven's Equal armor set. As such, subduing this gargantuan insectoid is a requirement if you want to progress to the end of the game.
Feng-Tail General QTE and stat check mechanics
The Black Myth: Wukong Feng-Tail General encounter resembles what you've seen in other adventure games or RPGs, such as in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Instead of dealing damage to a boss, you need to have attributes that are high enough to survive the ordeal.
As for the mechanics themselves:
- The Feng-Tail General spawns at the western part of Mount Huaguo, at the marshlands and edge of the large lake. The closest fast travel point is the Mantis-Catching Swamp shrine.
- From its spawn point, it will repeatedly jump to multiple areas while following a path that goes from west to east. When it reaches the eastern edge of the map, it will respawn at the western area again.
- Rather than fighting the boss, you need to fly to it using the Somersault Cloud. Land on top of it, then go to its head to start the QTE sequence.
- The first stat check is for your stamina, and the second is for your health and burn resistance.
The Feng-Tail General's damage and the Fireproof Mantle
There are several ways to improve your chances if you want to tame the giant beetle in Black Myth: Wukong. Initially, you might think of doing various things like finding all Celestial Pills (HP/mana/stamina upgrades) in various regions or using drinks and soaks that improve your HP and damage reduction considerably.
But there's an even more straightforward way of tackling this objective, and it involves obtaining the Fireproof Mantle. This is one of the vessel rewards in the game, and it comes from the Chapter 1 secret area: Ancient Guanyin Village. Using this vessel grants +600 burn resistance, which makes it invaluable for the encounter.
The stamina check
In any case, let's start this particular encounter with the stamina stat check. The first thing you need to do is fly to the Feng-Tail General's spawn point, or to its next jumping point.
When ready, dismount and land on its back. Then, press the button prompt while you're on its head. When you see the next prompt, press and continue holding the button. The giant beetle will jump three times, and the whole process will gradually drain your stamina. There are a few medicines that you can craft and use beforehand that can help you with this part. These include:
- Tonifying Decoction - Considerably increases maximum stamina for a long duration.
- Body-Fleeting Powder - All actions cost no stamina for a short duration.
- Ascension Powder - All actions cost no stamina for a long duration.
Note 1: If you run out of stamina or let go of the button, your character will fall down.
Note 2: If you try to start this QTE when the beetle is near the end of its predetermined path, it will jump through the invisible wall at the edge of the map, but you'll be left behind. That's why it's better to start this sequence near its spawning grounds.
The health check
Now, it's time to tame the Feng-Tail General in Black Myth: Wukong by nullifying its damage. This occurs after the giant beetle has jumped three times. The beetle will stop and stay stationary. You then have to press the button prompt on its head, then press again and hold it when prompted.
Important: Before pressing the button, make sure you activate the Fireproof Mantle vessel by pressing the "T" key. Once you gain a massive boost to your burn resistance, you should be completely immune to damage.
Your character will grab hold of the beetle's antennae, and you'll have to continue holding on for roughly 10 seconds as flames erupt from the giant beetle. If you use the Fireproof Mantle, you don't have anything to worry about. Otherwise, you need to have a lot of health, burn resistance, and damage reduction just to survive.
In any case, succeeding here nets you the Golden Feng-Tail Crown headgear, which grants +30 maximum mana and +60 defense. That does it: you've just tamed the Black Myth: Wukong Feng-Tail General. Now, you just need to take out the next boss to acquire the full mythical armor set and the Jingubang staff.
