    Coral Island

    • Developer: Stairway Games
    • Platform: Steam (PC), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
    • Release Date: October 8, 2022

Coral Island is so much like Stardew Valley in its mechanics that, if it weren't for the difference in art style, you might mistake it for a sequel. Stairway Games’ farming experience is all about restoring nature to its serene, unscathed state amid the repercussions of an oil spill all the while caring for animals, a farm, and more. You’ll get to engage with all of the usual Stardew-like activities, such as fishing and mining, while touching on brand-new mechanics, too. For instance, Coral Island features an entire undersea kingdom with merfolk inhabitants that you can befriend (or romance, if you choose). While it doesn’t support multiplayer just yet, the game is set to get all sorts of exciting features in 2024 including co-op play and more.

    Graveyard Keeper

    • Developer: Lazy Bear Games
    • Platform: Mobile, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
    • Release Date: August 15, 2018

Graveyard Keeper is an interesting game because it’s like Stardew Valley but is a much more twisted take on your average farming experience. In this graveyard-themed management game, you'll need to build and oversee a medieval-style graveyard. You can craft, explore dungeons, gather materials, and embark on quests, all the while maintaining your little cemetery. The pixel aesthetic, while reminiscent of Stardew Valley’s own, is a tad bleaker or perhaps darker while still remaining visually appealing. There are mysteries galore to uncover in this game, but sadly you’ll have to do so alone as there’s no multiplayer mode.

    My Time at Portia

    • Developer: Pathea
    • Platform: Mobile, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
    • Release Date: January 23, 2018

Like some others on this list, My Time at Portia plays much like Stardew Valley but with an entirely different art style. My Time at Portia and its just-as-good sequel, My Time at Sandrock, are both 3D with a cartoony vibe to them. You can craft, farm, forage, mine, and engage with the town’s residents much like you can in Stardew Valley. There’s a lot more stress on the story, however, with various questlines and a post-apocalyptic setting filled to the brim with mysteries to solve. My Time at Portia isn’t multiplayer, but you can play with your friends in the sequel, My Time at Sandrock.

    Spiritfarer

    Spiritfarer

    • Developer: Thunder Lotus
    • Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One
    • Release Date: August 18, 2020

Perhaps the most unlike other games on this list, Spiritfarer is somehow both a lovely Stardew Valley-like game and something much different. The genre's usual mechanics of farming, crafting, cooking, and creating bonds with others are all present, but they unfold on a customizable boat which, by the way, one ought to mention happens to be a ferry through purgatory. As you usher strangers and even friends through to the afterlife, the game is both somber and sweet, saddening and uplifting. It grapples with grief in a meaningful way. If you want a Stardew-style game that has a lot to say about life and death, this is the only such game we can confidently point to. The Farewell Edition is currently available to play for free on Xbox Game Pass.

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town

    • Developer: Marvelous
    • Platform: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam (PC)
    • Release Date: February 25, 2021

It’s no secret that ConcernedApe was inspired by Harvest Moon (which now goes by the name Story of Seasons) when creating Stardew Valley. One of the series’ more recent entries, Pioneers of Olive Town, is a great place to start if you’ve not dipped your toes into Story of Seasons’ diverse pool of titles. You can farm, you can fish, you can forage, and most importantly, you can craft to your heart’s content thanks to its extensive “maker” machine system. Whether you want to create jewels or some homemade yogurt, you’ll be able to thanks to these makers. You can also mine, befriend and romance the townsfolk, and play rewarding minigames much like in Stardew Valley. The only downfall is that Pioneers of Olive Town is entirely single-player.

    • Developer: Pixel Sprout Studios

    • Release Date: January 25, 2021

Sun Haven is Stardew Valley with much more magical flair and some dragons mixed in. Pixel Sprout Studios’ enchanting life sim whisks you away into a multiplayer-compatible world rich in lore with plenty of collecting, combat, farming, fishing, and romancing to partake in. You can choose from various races, whether you’d like to play as an angel or an elf, each with unique buffs. Just like in Stardew Valley, you can explore the mines, take on quests, and attend various seasonal festivals. There are also a few different cities to check out and build farms within, from ghastly Halloween-themed areas to whimsical woodland ones. In many ways, Sun Haven feels even more fleshed-out than Stardew Valley, with its more expansive skill system and fairy-tale-esque features. This game is a great stepping stone to land on once you’ve depleted your interest in ConcernedApe’s own farming sim.
