Black Myth Wukong has sold 18 million units

Damn.. I had no interest in this game.. Am I missing out?? What do you think about Black Myth Wykong, SW? Have you played already? Want to play it?

playing it currently, only a few hours in. it's very much in the souls / nioh ballpark. it was tough coming from shadow of the erdtree to wukong because of the freedom elden ring gives you with your character build and exploration. wukong is the other end of the spectrum and constrained and confined in both those regards. but i'm starting to get into the groove with it

Haven't played it, but been following it since initial reveal. It looks really good. Old school action game. Glad it is doing so well. Need more pure games like this.

Though I did have fun at the start, I kinda new I wouldn't be a fan of a 'boss rush' style game.

Still, it was nice checking a UE 5 game with more gameplay than Hellblade 2 or Still Wakes the deep :)

Amazing they "only" spent $70 mil over six years of development; I feel like a game of similar caliber developed in the West would have been in the $150+ mil at that point.

Yeah. Happy for their (the company's, not China's) success but it is amazing what a one-way relationship this often is.

On one hand, the CCP restricts a lot of trade (especially entertainment or "cultural" products) and access to Western influence, and yet on the other hand the West seems to be very welcoming of a.) trade from China, and b.) willing to bend over backwards to censor or alter their content to get into China.

I have no doubt that Black Myth is a good game and would sell well if it were a game developed in the West, but I think the only reason it has sold incredibly well is because of this one-sided relationship that allows for both domestic (Chinese) sales and foreign sales.

Just my opinion based on what I've seen, curious what others think. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Western devs - I want to push my political beliefs in games.

Wukong devs - we just want to make a fun game.

@Macutchi: @SolidGame_basic: I've been following and hyping this game for a long time. I think people mixed with Black Myth Wukong too many times is, this is NOT a Souls genre game. It never was. It's Sekiro meets God of War 2018 gameplay mechanics as this is more toward an action-adventure game. Sekiro is a game about parrying with little in the dodge mechanics, this game doesn't even have blocking at all, you gotta dodge everything, and you learn a million moves and spells and stuff. Outside of the mobility and speed being like Sekiro's, there are not many similarities. It shares things like Darksiders 3 & Ninja Gaiden. But I do agree with Macutchi, it’s closer to Nioh. (Even though Nioh was a meh game to me that is) Never compare this with Elden Ring, that's not how it works. (I would love to hear FromSoft's opinion regarding Black Myth: Wukong)

Another thing I like is the enemies are surprisingly vocal, and so far the English voice-over is surprisingly good (maybe not so much the main character) and doesn’t have that usual casting-couch quality. I couldn't do Chinese as I'm way more familiar with Japanese, so go English for this one IMO.

Solid, you need to try it, I'm really enjoying it but it is very linear and that's a good thing, give open-worlds a break. This is based on Journey to the West. And hey, if you like Dragon Ball, then this is the real Dragon Ball in a way😅

That makes Wukong one of the fastest-selling games of all time. It's certainly the fastest-selling RPG of all time, beating the launch sales of Elden Ring, Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberpunk 2077.

Wukong's launch sales are comparable to even GTA5, which sold 16M in its first week but there's no figures available for its second week. Either way, that would make Wukong one of the top two fastest-selling games of all time.

Breakdown of Wukong sales in two weeks:

Platform

• PC - 15 million
• PS5 - 3 million

Region

• China - 14 million
• Overseas - 4 million

Biggest two-week launches of 2024 so far:

1. Black Myth: Wukong - 18 million (14M China, 4M outside China)
2. Palworld - 12 million (5M China, 7M outside China)
3. Resident Evil 4 (remake) - 4 million
4. Helldivers 2 - 3 million
5. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - 2-3 million

Even if we exclude Wukong's China sales, just its 4M overseas sales alone would be tied with RE4 as the year's second biggest launch.

WTF, how old are you?

I'm about 75% done with the game. It's exactly everything I wanted since I first saw the reveal trailer 4 years ago. It's beautiful, it's hard, it has a great story and many well-done characters, some of the best boss fights you'll play in a game(and there are many), amazing graphics and environments, etc.

You can tell a lot of love and passion was put into this project.

Also Davillain is tripping. Chinese voices is the way to go 😆

Wow... Pc makes up 15 million of those sales? Is that accurate?

@TheEroica: Yeah, I was wondering about that PC number too. That is FIVE times the sales of PS5. If this holds up, Sony will probably start releasing everything on PC as well.

It's a great game. Gameplay-wise, it's pretty solid and there's a number of builds that you can do that makes the staff gameplay fleshed out.

Game feels linear in like the first 4 chapters, but it opens up a whole lot more in chapter 5 and beyond. It's still fairly linear but it's not a bad thing because it's fairly paced out well imo.

Presentation is also godly. Like this is contender for the best-looking game for 2024.

I wanna keep playing but life is pretty busy at the moment.

The only reason it sold significantly more on PC is because the majority of the sales came from China and consoles are not the main platform of choice. They were completely banned from the country until 2015.

I'm not very interested in it anymore, for some reason. Maybe because people compare it to God of War all the time.

Might get it when it's cheap.

it's not like god of war in terms of lots of dialogue or cinematics, if that's what you're worried about.

i'm a few hours in and haven't heard the protag talk yet. he's a new incarnation of wukong, who does speak in the intro, as far as i can tell.

imagine every time you met an npc in elden ring it cut to a brief cut scene, but they're as few and far between, have as little to say and talk as cryptically as they do in er. that's my experience with wukong so far

There's other stuff I'm a bit unsure about as well, like too few and easy enemies between bosses. Seen people describe it as a boss rush game as a result (which I'm not very interested in). Also not sure about how the exploration is, but it doesn't seem like a big focus. That'd be a shame to me, I love exploring in these kind of games.

Think I have to see more of it to know what's what.. The graphics are very nice, and the combat looks pretty fun at least.
